Day 1: Angkor Thom – Preah Khan – Neak Pan – East Bon – Pre Rup – Foot Massage
Our guide and driver meet you in Siem Reap and drive you to visit Angkor Thom, the ancient royal city of the Khmer Empire with its centerpiece; the Bayon temple. As you approach, you will notice the enigmatic faces of former King Jayavarman VII looking in every direction. Your guide will take you to the Terrace of the Elephants, which served as a platform from where the King could welcome back his victorious army, and the Terrace of the Leper King, which holds detailed carvings winding along a narrow passageway that leads to the Baphuon complex. And continue to drive to visit Preah Khan temple, originally a Buddhist monastery and school, this temple was dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s father. After discovery, the temple was mainly left as it was found without renovation. Home-make lunch at the local house (Mr. Peout and his wife, Mrs. Gin living in a small house with a peaceful atmosphere and green garden will serve you a great lunch and share their lives story during the Khmer Rouge to present). After lunch, we continue to visit the rest of the temples in the grand circle such as Neak Pan, Ta Som, East Mebon, and Pre Rup temples. Return to Siem Reap town, and stop at one of the Khmer Traditional Massage Places to enjoy 60 minutes foot massage before dropping you off at the hotel.

Day 2: Phnom Krom Sunrise – Floating Village – Countryside Tour by scooter – Village Cooking Class
Early wake up in the morning for a transfer to Phnom Krom (13km south of Siem Reap), we climb up the hill to view the sunrise over the rice paddies and the floating village of Tonle Sap Lake and enjoy the picnic breakfast on the hip of Phnom Krom. After breakfast, take the boat ride visiting the Chong Kneas Floating Village on Tonle Sap Lake and take a boat trip to see the daily life in the village. The natural wonder of Tonle Sap offers an insight into the old tradition of riparian life and the natural splendor of the countryside and is followed by an Artisan Dangkor workshop. Return to the hotel for relaxation, and lunch on your own. Until 3 pm, our guide and the scooter driver (a tuk-tuk is available to ride instead of a scooter if you prefer a tuk-tuk better) pick you up and ride you to Krabei Riel Village to visit the daily activities of the villagers working in the vegetable gardens, rice fields, and weaving, a lot of stops for pictures and interaction with villagers. Then we get to Mr. Ron’s house and are greeted by his family, we will enjoy the cooking class that will lead by his wife, Mrs. Sina. Our guide will assist to do the presentation of his family and also bring you around his vegetable garden before we begin to learn to cook 3 Cambodian dishes with his wife. Taste the food you cooked as dinner, then say goodbye to Mr. Ron’s family and our scooter driver(s) ride you back to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Transport: Private vehicle and driver in the morning, afternoon scooter and driver (one each)

Day 3: Ta Prohm – Local House High Tea – Angkor Wat – Sunset Phnom Bakheng
Breakfast at the hotel.
Start the early morning at 6.30 am, to beat the crowds at the photogenic Ta Prohm temple of “Tomb Raider” fame, the temple that had nearly disappeared into the jungle and remains overgrown, an oddly haunting and exotic scene. The magnificent roots of a tree, pushing between the huge stone blocks of the temple in a sort of embrace, evoke feelings that you may remember forever. Undisturbed by crowds of tourists you can better appreciate the interplay of man and nature at this magical site. Then, walk through the Sra Srong village – just behind Ta Prom temple exploring the villagers making wooden carvings and palm leaf weaving. Enjoy a coffee break at one of the villager’s house and the opportunity to interact with the local family. Return to the hotel for relaxation, and lunch on your own.
Afternoon, visit Angkor Wat, one of the modern wonders of the world. Be amazed by the sheer size of the temple and learn how the Khmer Empire prospered between the 9th and 13th centuries, around the time when Angkor Wat was built. Stroll through the intricately carved hallways that show hundreds of fine carvings and discover small shrines still in use today by the local people. Enjoy the sunset from Phnom Bakheng, one of two hills dominating the plain of Angkor, and have a spectacular view of the Western Baray and Angkor Wat. Return to the hotel and the dinner on your own.
Included for the day:
Transport: Private vehicle and driver
Tour guide: English-speaking guide
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Viroth’s Hotel (deluxe garden view) or a similar standard hotel
Day 4: Kban Spean Hiking – Banteay Srei – Akira Landmine Museum
We drive to Kbal Spean, which translates to “Bridge Head”. From the entrance, it is an easy 2.5km hike up to the hill passing through a nice forest offering beautiful views over the surrounding plains. On top, you will find a river with many rocks under the surface holding inscriptions and Hindu statues referred to as lingas which date back to the 11th century. There is also a waterfall on top that drops significant amounts of water during the wet season but dries up entirely during the height of the dry season (March/April). Lunch at the local restaurant
On the way back to Siem Reap will stop to visit, the jewel of Khmer art, Banteay Srei temple, located one hour from Siem Reap. This red sandstone temple is one of Angkor’s most significant structures as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings in an amazing state of preservation. And a final stop of the day at the small but intriguing Landmine Museum of Mr. Aki Ra. Since Cambodia’s freedom from war, Mr. Aki Ra has dedicated himself to helping the Cambodian people by clearing the mines which have been left behind. Any form of donation is appreciated in order to help him continue his work.

You get to experience Cambodia authentically and at the ground level- the awesome ancient temples, the horrifying but important political history and the resilient, friendly people and their present day life/livelihoods. I cannot recommend Merry Travel and Sam enough! Our trip was a 10 out of 10!
