Day 1: Siem Reap – Peoung Kamnou – Koh Ker
At 8.00 am, our guide and driver pick you up from the hotel in Siem Reap and drive to Koh Ker. En route, we will stop to visit Peoung Kamnou on the foot of Kulen Mountain, it is the ancient carving of Hindu gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) on the original stone from the 9th century. Then continue to drive to Koh Ker, and on arrival get to one of the local houses. Pu Cheourn and his family welcome you, he will get you some drinks, local fruits, and lunch. He will also share with you the story of his life during the civil war from 1979 to 1999.
Then we drive to visit the Koh Ker temples. Koh Ker was built in the 10th century and functioned briefly as the Khmer Empire’s capital between 928 and 944 A.D. The style of the Koh Ker temple is different from any other temple in Cambodia and has more of a resemblance to the ancient pyramids of Egypt. Partially overgrown by the forest and inhabited only by birds, this temple and its surroundings are an exceptional experience. Return to the Pu Cheourn’s house for a quick shower before going to our campsite which is set up close to one of the old hidden temples, enjoy the authentic picnic dinner with candlelight, and overnight in a tent.

Day 2: Koh Ker – Preah Vihear Temple – Anlong Veng – Siem Reap
Have early breakfast at the site, and we drive to Preah Vihear Mountain, stop at the checkpoint, and ride the 4WD up to the top of the Mountain to visit Preah Vihear Temple located at the Thailand border. Preah Vihear dates back to the beginning of the 11th century. It dominates the plain from its prominent position in the Dangrek Mountains at an altitude of over 700m. The temple is located near the Thai border and was previously occupied by the Thais. It has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Explore this historic temple and take in the sweeping views from the summit over Thailand and Cambodia.
Drive down the hill to return to the checkpoint and proceed to Anlong Veng, lunch at the local restaurant. Stop to visit Ta Mok’s house, on a peaceful lakeside site, Ta Mok’s house is a spartan structure with a bunker in the basement, five simple wall murals downstairs (one of Angkor Wat, four of Prasat Preah Vihear), and three more murals upstairs, including an idyllic wildlife scene. The only furnishings that weren’t looted are the floor tiles. There is now a permanent photographic collection of Khmer Rouge–related images from the 1960s to 1990s, ‘100 Photos for Memory and Education, as part of the Anlong Veng Peace Centre initiative to heal society.
Drive to Siem Reap, we arrive in Siem Reap at about 6 pm – drop off – end of services!

Kris M2023-03-09 This is the way to experience Cambodia! Merry Travel/ Sam is an excellent tour guide and the tour is perfectly curated . You get to experience Cambodia authentically and at the ground level- the awesome ancient temples, the horrifying but important political history and the resilient, friendly people and their present day life/livelihoods. I cannot recommend Merry Travel and Sam enough! Our trip was a 10 out of 10! Trek7907062023-03-05 Just the right level of support Sam seems to intuitively know when to explain and when to let us discover things for ourselves. The discovery of Angkor Wat--truly one of the great treasures of humanity--unfolded flawlessly in this way: unhurried, flowing, and awe-inspiring. Thanks to Sam and the Merry Travel team for an unforgettable experience! I have taken 5 groups of students and 2 groups of adults. In addition, I have recommended at least 3 other friends to work with him. If you want professionalism and fairness, Sam is the person for you. Merry Travel is an outstanding business and I cannot applaud it enough. We did 3 days of cycling in Angkor Wat, then went to Phnom Penh and then Kampot. Sam worked out all the transfers and we had excellent guides, including Sam himself. He knows what it takes to make the customer happy and he is very even-keeled in his approach.
