Cheung Ek Killing Fields
Just outside Phnom Penh lies Choeung Ek, one of Cambodia’s most infamous Killing Fields. Between 1975 and 1979, under the brutal Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot, Choeung Ek became the execution site for thousands of men, women, and children. Targeting intellectuals, professionals, and ethnic minorities, the regime sought to create a classless agrarian society, leading to widespread atrocities.
Today, Choeung Ek stands as a poignant memorial to the victims of this dark chapter in history. The site features a Buddhist stupa filled with over 5,000 human skulls, a powerful symbol of remembrance and a stark reminder of the horrors of genocide. Visitors can walk among the mass graves and learn about the past through an educational center, ensuring that the memories of the victims are preserved and the lessons of this tragic period are never forgotten.
Visiting Choeung Ek is a sobering yet essential experience, offering profound insights into Cambodia’s past and the resilience of its people.
The Choeung Ek Killing Fields are located about 17 kilometers (approximately 10.5 miles) southwest of Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. The site is accessible via National Road 2 and is a significant historical and memorial site, attracting visitors who seek to understand and honor the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.
