Taphrom Temple

Nestled within the Angkor Archaeological Park near Siem Reap, Cambodia, Ta Prohm Temple stands as a mesmerizing testament to the interplay between nature and ancient architecture. Constructed in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, this Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university exudes a timeless, mystical charm. Unlike many other restored temples in Angkor, Ta Prohm has been left in a largely unrestored state, allowing the jungle to reclaim its space. Towering trees and their sprawling roots weave through the crumbling stone structures, creating a unique and photogenic landscape that has captivated visitors from around the world. This enchanting temple, which gained global fame as a filming location for “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” offers an evocative glimpse into the past, where history and nature exist in harmonious decay.

Location

Ta Prohm Temple is located within the Angkor Archaeological Park, approximately 1 kilometer east of Angkor Thom and near Siem Reap, Cambodia. Nestled in lush jungle, it is easily accessible by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or guided tour from Siem Reap, about a 15-20 minute ride. The temple, known for its iconic overgrown trees and mystical atmosphere, is part of the standard Angkor pass. Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal to avoid crowds and heat. Key features include the entwined roots of strangler fig trees, intricate bas-reliefs, and the serene central sanctuary.
