Wat Banan in Battambang
Wat Banan, also known as Phnom Banan, is one of the best-preserved Khmer temples in Battambang Province, Cambodia. The temple is renowned for its five towers, reminiscent of Angkor Wat, and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. To reach the temple, visitors must climb a steep laterite staircase flanked by nagas (serpent-like creatures).
Built in the 11th century by King Udayadityavarman II, Wat Banan was originally a Hindu temple. It was later transformed into a Buddhist temple by King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century. The temple features intricate carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. Despite some looting, Wat Banan remains in relatively good condition compared to other temples in the region.
Wat Banan is located about 22 kilometers south of Battambang City. It takes approximately 45-50 minutes to reach the temple by motorbike or Tuk-Tuk.
